He graduated from the History-Art History Program of the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE BTK) in 1984. From 1989, he worked as a museologist at the Painting Department of the Hungarian National Gallery, of which, in 1999, he became the secretary for research, and from 2010 to 2023, he served as deputy director for research. He is a researcher of 20th-century fine art, with a special focus on the following topics/areas: the art scene of Nagybánya/Baia Mare, Romanian/Transylvanian art in general, cultural life during the interwar period, and socialist realism. In addition to curating numerous exhibitions, he has also authored and edited articles, studies and books on these subjects. He is a regular speaker at academic conferences and promotional events. He is co-author of the handbook entitled Hungarian Art in the 20th Century (1999) and curated the exhibition Destiny and Symbol: Hungarian Art in Transylvania 1920-1990 (2015, Hungarian National Gallery). He was awarded the Pasteiner Medal and the Lajos Németh Prize in 2000, and the Elek Petrovics Prize in 2012.
