PRINT NETWORKS Finissage and COMMONPRESS POP-UP Show: Edgardo Antonio Vigo and the Artists’ Periodicals

Artpool Art Research Center
#South-America #mail art #collection 2025.11.20. 17:00 - 19:00

Edgardo Antonio Vigo (1928–1997), Argentine artist and well-known figure in the Latin American resistance art movement of the 1970s, pursued a rich, versatile, and experimental creative career, a segment of which is now on display for Hungarian audiences. The Artpool collection exhibition emphasizes Vigo's special relationship with artists’ periodicals, showing how the artist used this medium not only to create a creative shared space, but also as an effective tool for disseminating art.

The finissage of the exhibition will feature the launch of a special issue of the magazine and excerpts from a documentary film currently in production.

With the help of Vigo's friends and colleagues, Artpool has published the latest, 61st issue of Commonpress, an art magazine launched in the 1970s, which pays tribute to the Argentine artist. In response to our call for mail art, twenty-eight participants from thirteen countries sent in their works, which we are presenting in a pop-up exhibition alongside the magazine, published in a limited edition of one hundred copies and containing original works of art as well.

The guest of honor will be American mail artist Chuck Welch, who has developed a long and fruitful relationship with Vigo and will personally bring his work created for Commonpress. He will be accompanied by his daughter Lauryn Welch as well as Eloise Sherrid, who are visiting the key figures and archives of the international Mail Art network for the purposes of filming their documentary M.A.I.L. A twenty-minute excerpt from the film will be shown at the finissage, featuring a conversation with Uruguayan poet, performer, and mail artist Clemente Padín, who passed away in October this year.

The Print Networks: Edgardo Antonio Vigo and the Artists’ Magazines collection show’s curator is Marie Boivent, Professor of Visual Arts (Université Rennes 2.).

Date: 20 November 2025, 5 PM
The event will be held in English.
